Literary Awards

Each year, works of literature for children and young adults are honoured for their artistic and literary merits.
The Faculty of Education Resource Centre actively acquires the works that have received major Canadian as well as international awards.
International Awards
- Caldecott Medal (U.S) "The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott."
- Carnegie Medal (U.K.) Established 1937. Presented annually to an outstanding book published in the United Kingdom.
- Newbery Medal (U.S) Named for the named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery, the medal is awarded by the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
- Children's book of the Year Award (Australia) "The first Australian Children's Book of the Year Award was made in 1946. At that time and until 1952, there was only one award. The Picture Book of the Year Award was established as a separate award in 1952."
Children Literature Awards in Canada
- Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children Award Established in 1947. A medal presented annually to the author of the best children's book published in Canada.
- Canadian Library Association Young Adult Canadian Book Award This award recognizes an author of an outstanding English language Canadian book which appeals to young adults between the ages of 13 and 18.
- Governor-General's Awards for Children's Literature The Gouvernor General's awards for Children Literature were established in 1987.
Regional Children Literature Awards
- Alberta Children's Book of the Year This award is presented annually to the Alberta-based publisher producing the best children's or young adult book, including fiction, non-fiction and picture books.
- Ontario Library Association Forest of Reading Awards
Every year, the Ontario Library Association's Forest of Reading program honours works by Canadian authors as selected by children in various age groups. This celebration of reading showcases Canadian talent in fiction, non-fiction and illustrations. - Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards These awards are administered by the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador. The awards alternate on a bi-yearly basis, with children’s literature being one of the categories.
- Pacific Northwest Library Association's Young Reader's Choice Award
The Pacific Northwest Library Association’s Young Reader’s Choice Award is the oldest children’s choice award in Canada and the US. It is the only regional award chosen by children of the two countries. - Saskatchewan Book Awards Established in 1993, this prize celebrates the achievements of Saskatchewan authors and publishers while helping to promote their books.
- Trillium Book Award The Trillium Award is open to books in any genre: fiction, non-fiction, drama, children’s books and poetry. It honours the literary talent of Ontario writers.
